This is an app that calculates and displays the heat-up behavior of a stack of thermal elements subjected to a thermal step input. The values for each component's thermal resistance and thermal capacitance are assumed to be known. The method used is based on a small subset of the theory discussed in JEDEC Standard No. 51-14.
Thermal Step Response Visualization Tool
Six thermal elements are hard-coded in the app and there is minimal error checking. Entering a zero in the input to turn off an element will result in an error. Instead, enter a small value for Rth and Cth to make the thermal contribution of that element negligible. The plots autorange based on the size of the smallest time constant, so don't get carried away.
The plots are interactive; hovering over a trace will show values and zooming into interesting regions is supported.
This app is intended to be a useful addition to using Spice to model thermal problems. Spice is vastly more powerful but sometimes we just want to know the line-out temperatures and how long the transition to steady state takes without a bunch of clicks. I have attached two LTspice files: one that is the step input verification for the default settings in this app, and the second an example of using Spice to model system behavior when the input is pulsed.
