Overview
As the industry moves away from the limitations of the traditional Color Rendering Index (CRI), the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) has introduced TM-30-24. This latest update streamlines the method for evaluating light source color rendition by providing a robust online tool for calculating Fidelity (R_f) and Gamut (R_g). The PNNL Applied Lighting Spectral Calculator (https://spectralcalculator.pnnl.gov/) is the official tool for computing these metrics.
Differences Between TM-30-24 and Earlier Versions
- Platform Independence: The IES has transitioned from standalone, macro-enabled Excel files to a centralized Reference Implementation via the PNNL Spectral Calculator. This ensures all users access the most up-to-date logic without version-control issues.
- Color vector graphic: Reorganized the graphic metrics location and emphasize Red Fidelity R_f,h1 (lower left) and Red Chroma Shift R_cs,h1 (lower right) metrics, which are critical for high-end architectural and retail lighting.

- Alpha-opic Integration: The tool now calculates alpha-opic quantities (e.g., melanopic lux) based on CIE S 026/E:2018, supporting the growing demand for circadian and integrative lighting design.
How to Use the Calculator:
- Access the Tool: Navigate to the PNNL Spectral Calculator.
- Input Data:
- You can upload SPDX files (Standardizing Photometric and Colorimetric Data Exchange, ANSI/IES TM-27-20 format).
- Alternatively, use the Excel template provided on the site or simply paste spectral power distribution (SPD) data directly into the interface.
- Batch Processing: For large-scale projects, use the User Library to process thousands of SPDs simultaneously.
- Select Metrics: Ensure TM-30-24 and, if needed, CIE S 026/E:2018 are selected.
- Generate Reports:
- Download results in .json or .xlsx formats for data analysis.
- Export high-resolution Color Vector Graphics as .png or full specification reports as .pdf.
