Most of the electricity in an LED becomes heat rather than light (about 70% heat and 30% light).[1]
One can calculate the thermal power of a device to be derived from the following equation.
Total Electrical Power = Power_Optical + Power_Thermal
If we take the PT-50 devices for example, the Electrical & Optical Characteristics are shown in the table below.
Example 1) PT-50-B @ Typical Conditions (Test drive current = 12.5A, Typical Voltage = 3V)
Total Electrical Power = 12.5A * 3V = 37W
Power_Optical = 14W
therefore : Total Electrical Power - Power_Optical = Power_Thermal
Power_Thermal = 37W - 14W = 23W
Example 2) PT-50-CG @ Typical Conditions (Test drive current = 12.5A, Typical Voltage = 3V)
In regards to the PT-50-CG, this is a Blue die utilizing a phosphor to convert the color to green. Utilizing the 14W for the Power_Optical for the CG would be correct in this instance. The solution to this example is the same as Example 1
Example 3) PT-50-B @ Maximum Current Conditions (Drive Current = 20A, Voltage = ~3V)
According to the datasheet graph below, at 20A we have a relative flux increase to 140%. Therefore at this current the radiometric power would be 140% of 14W = 19.6W
Total Electrical Power = 20A * 3V = 60W
Power_Optical = 19.6W
therefore : Total Electrical Power - Power_Optical = Power_Thermal
Power_Thermal = 60W - 19.6W = 40.4W
